COSTUME DESIGN FOR THEATRE

THE CHERRY ORCHARD

BY ANTON CHEKOV

    • The design emphasizes transition, memory, and loss a world suspended between a fading past and an uncertain future. The estate is not just a physical space but a symbol of nostalgia and denial, slowly being overtaken by time and change. The design should feel elegant yet fragile, beautiful yet already disappearing.

    • Color Palette. Past: Soft whites, pale pinks, faded creams, light blues .Transition: Muted greens, greys, and browns. End: Cold whites, empty neutrals, and harsh contrasts. The gradual draining of color mirrors the characters’ inability to hold onto the past.

    • Costumes reflect social change: Aristocratic characters wear outdated, elegant clothing, slightly worn. Lopakhin and the younger generation dress more practically and modernly. Colors fade across acts, reinforcing emotional erosion
